Patrick W. Shaw's The Modern American Novel of Violence discusses literary violence in detail, and considers Blood Meridian in the context of the American cultural obsession with violence.  Shaw places McCarthy among indigenous writers, like Ellis, Faulkner, Selby, Hemingway and others for whom violence is a primary theme. This is one of the first extended studies of the subject to situate McCarthy among his contemporaries.
