We’ve got some exciting if slightly tentative news for you. Our friend Manuel Broncano and his colleague, Irma Cantu, from Texas A & M International University in Laredo, Texas, have arranged facilities for our 2018 conference at the luxurious Hotel Safi in Monterrey, Mexico with the cooperation of the University of Monterrey.

Irma, Manuel and I began to discuss this possibility at the International American Studies Association conference in Laredo this past summer. It’s gratifying that those discussions are bearing fruit already.

We now need to select the appropriate weekend in October or early November 2018 to minimize competition with any other ALA or MLA Regional conferences. I can already tell you that by agreeing to price the facilities there as educational conference rates, we’re going to see some remarkably low costs for guest rooms, meals and meeting facilities.

We’ll have more concrete news for you within a few weeks.

I must say that I find it remarkable that this is the first time we’re going south of that border kingdom about which McCathy has written so often and so brilliantly. I am really looking forward to engaging with Latin American scholars who have been working on McCarthy’s border writing and in meeting to consider his work in Mexico myself.
