We’ve got some exciting if slightly tentative news for you. Our friend Manuel Broncano and his colleague, Irma Cantu, from Texas A & M International University in Laredo, Texas, have arranged facilities for our 2018 conference at the luxurious Hotel Safi in Monterrey, Mexico with the cooperation of the University of Monterrey.

Irma, Manuel and I began to discuss this possibility at the International American Studies Association conference in Laredo this past summer. It’s gratifying that those discussions are bearing fruit already.

We now need to select the appropriate weekend in October or early November 2018 to minimize competition with any other ALA or MLA Regional conferences. I can already tell you that by agreeing to price the facilities there as educational conference rates, we’re going to see some remarkably low costs for guest rooms, meals and meeting facilities.

We’ll have more concrete news for you within a few weeks.

I must say that I find it remarkable that this is the first time we’re going south of that border kingdom about which McCathy has written so often and so brilliantly. I am really looking forward to engaging with Latin American scholars who have been working on McCarthy’s border writing and in meeting to consider his work in Mexico myself.

Okay, the latest on 2018 in Monterrey, Mexico: plans are proceeding very nicely. The conference will take place on October 18-21, 2018, at the Safi Hotel in the San Pedro district of Monterrey, very close to the center of town. We’re negotiating room rates at the moment, and we’re also excited that we will apparently have both university and municipal support for the project.

Part of that support is shaping up as a government-sponsored award to Cormac McCarthy for furthering understanding and awareness of Mexican civilization and life on the border through his fiction (I suspect they haven’t seen The Counselor yet. Ah well). I told them he rarely if ever shows up for this sort of thing but, in the words of that eminent musicologist Fats Waller, one never knows, do one?

Manuel Broncano and I are working on the CFP but we’ll hang onto it until after the upcoming January 15th deadline for proposals for the ALS San Francisco conference in May (I’m definitely going to the conference because I love the ALA but will probably not be presenting a paper). I will also be going to Monterrey in the second half of February as soon as my co-organizers, Manuel and Prof. Irma Cantu of Texas A&M International University in Laredo, agree on a date to meet there and go over details of the hotel and events.

For you Peter Josyph fans, we’ll be using one of his sublime ATPH paintings for what’ll surely become a trez collectible conference poster, and we’re hoping that he’ll also be joining us to deliver one of his inimitable keynote addresses. We’re talking about all that now.

We’re working on some other special events as wll and I will keep you all updated. Look for the CFP sometime in late January and start hording your shekels.

A little more serendipitous news: two of our guest speakers have agreed to deliver (a) the keynote, by none other than our own Peter Josyph, subject to be indeterminate as always, and (b) a plenary talk on Mexico in the works of Cormac McCarthy by august Hemingway, McCarthy and boolfighting maven Allen Josephs.

There will be other guest speakers and events announced shortly. Stay tuned.

More: thanks to excellent prospects for full university sponsorship, the conference hotel will now likely be La Fiesta, located adjacent to the university campus. We are also discussing support for a selected volume of essays from the conference devoted to McCarthy and Mexico, which Manuel Broncano and I would edit, as well as a new, stunning Peter Josyph conference poster.

We should have our room block set aside very soon, at which point will issue an initial CFP and go to work on the registration fee.

Boy, I sure hope you people like Mexican food.
