    Howdy folks,

Was wondering if anyone who has been the archives and looked through the material on Suttree recalls any marginalia or notes on the dream-image Suttree has as he is coming out of his typhoid delirium: I mean the image he dreams “of a race at the poles who rode in sleds of walrus hide and rucked up horn and ivory all drawn by dogs… bloodstained hunters drifting like spores above the frozen chlorine void from flower to flower of bright vermillion gore across the vast boreal plain.”

    Any recollections would be appreciated!

JVH5: I don’t remember seeing any notes or marginalia in the Archives regarding this passage, but I could have easily missed something or forgotten it. However if you are looking for a possible source of this material, have a look at Secrets of Polar Travel (1917) where the author Robert Edwin Peary describes “The Peary System.”

“The ugly fact is that books are made out of books.”–McCarthy

Thank you Wes. I hope to get down to the archives one of these days to check for myself. Do you recommend Peary’s book (which I’ve discovered a pdf of online) because McCarthy’s reading of it has somehow been documented? It’s too bad McCarthy hasn’t written any kind of memoir. I’d be interested in hearing about his time spent in Alaska, and if he had participated at all in Inuit culture.

His time away in Alaska has always intrigued me as well. And that tidbit about living in all 50 states has always kind of bugged me. What does that really mean? So, yeah, a memoir would be quite a ride.

Wasn’t there some noise awhile back about Cormac publishing some nonfiction thing? And he did mention writing a journal if he gets “too old” to write fiction in an interview… I’ve never heard that 50 states anecdote before, where’s that from?
This topic came up right on time for the Iditarod, which formally begins tomorrow morning. I’m in Anchorage, and have contemplated looking into whether or not he was stationed here at JBER, but I’m not really sure how to go about that.

    Mother He,

Sorry, I don’t recall or have a citation on the 50-state thing at the moment, but I am certain we’ve discussed it around here before. I’ll try to get something on that soon.

The son of a friend of mine from my hometown in Iowa is involved in that dog race. He might just be on a support team, though. Another person from my hometown who wrestled in college at Iowa actually ran a dog sled for a few years in the Iditarod before giving that up to race bicycles as a pro. Great athlete.

This sledding discussion makes me think of the travois stuff from The Crossing. The grocery cart from The Road maybe too also.
