That’s a good and easy version to read. Nice to feature it and start a new thread.

What did you think about it toejac?

Sorry for the late reply Ive been on bus and train for the last two days but fascinating I found it. And you can see strains of this unconscious percolation into life littered throughout McCarthy’s works. Fucking rat poison indeed. But what goes unspoken in this article seems to be that the more elegant dreams are denied to the ruder, perhaps more logical, forms.

Shamanic traditions existing within all healthy cultures, in our own we call the monetized version a psychotherapist, there is an unspoken implication that few have any access to the raw medium of the world, or who are possessed by an unconsciousness either willing or able to grapple with the terror pregnant complexities of existence. Like fish who lack the proper structures to experience anything but the most rudimental forms of emotions, they’d simply go mad if forced to contemplate their lot. Not that they escape their lot. Or can. A spiritual elitism very much in keeping with Gnostic conceptions. The damned truly are damned and there is nothing they can do but take down the ambiguous cases with themselves.

Suttree, the kid, Ballard, JCG, Billy, the boy, the man all are as the judge accuses, keenly aware of the emptiness and the despair. Certainly its a crime Id warrant many would refrain if given the choice.

Contrast those dreamers with say Harrogate whose dreaming seems limited to fantasies of the hylic. The one exception being his trek down into the sewers of Knoxville where perhaps one of those who spoke to him called; Perche sprechi? And Suttree his ineffectual redeemer who like Bell simply wants to get everyone back into the boat. Except the boat is stoved half capsized and lord if there arent drowned mariners bailing the ocean into the orlop. But then who can blame them? If our brains are supercomputers how many untold billions have been by nightmare nightly raped through the ages while grinding away at the ineffable answer to this cosmic weirdward?

Glanton usurps the world and its about a bad a case of the primacy as ever was heard (and would that I could put Glanton and Black in a pueblo for a forenoon) but this of course makes intelligible his seemingly contradictory request for a tarot reading and his usurpation for he never denies the unconscious rather he asserts his mastery. If he saw no portents in the fire it may well be he thought to impart unto the fire portents of his own. Put another way if Ahab wishes equipollence with the sun (at least at first) then Glanton is set on supremacy. The difference that while Ahab would have down this dumbshow Glanton would have it up or down so long as it is by his hand. But then theres another who dispenses and I would argue that the true purpose of the tarot reading was to force the judge to show his hand.

Call it versancy. Some have access, most dont, and those that do are in danger of being whelmed. If consciousness be a mount under threat of being swallowed by its antithetical ocean. McCarthy even expresses pity for those who lack this access, as in the case of Wallace, but that pity can be extended to the masses who are most entranced by it. Or enslaved. Poor unwitting acolytes.

Consider the root of all evil, transubstantiation at its finest. If language is the ultimate intercessor then money is the ultimate representation. Conceptions arrive with language thus evil is an emergent property of substitution. I maintain yet Augustine was in err. Even so it appears the moral intentionality McCarthy attributes to dreams is evinced in their sparing employment of language, that unconsciousness in its viscerality is insisting we see things as they are without the taint of illusion. Allow the object to explode its own meaning sans secondary mediums. For each thing will do so if allowed. Evil then inherent in losing focus of the object itself.

Its actually pretty funny reading through the commentators deliriously wondering what cataclysmic apocalypse left so few commas to roam dumb and marionette the lines of the article but ah what canst thou do?

Wow, a lot of profound ideas in here…some along the inquiries that Ed was posting earlier in response to the article. Nice to see some symmetry.

It’s so interesting you mention healing. I really feel like a lot of the meat of consciousness and unconsciousness…relates to healing.

I am very deep in believe of Shamanistic and older practices. Of ritual. Of medicine. Of healing.

Here we think of your good example of monetized healing…and it is psychotherapist. In so many ways that’s the only path for healing of the unconsciousness versus consciousness. We don’t teach down-to-earth relationships between art, music and our mental health. Although literature, art is potentially a doorway to transformation.

I need time to re-read and further consider your thoughts here. I find them very very relevant and valuable.

I wish we could have more dialogue about these concepts in this society. I spend a lot of time looking for space to share these ideas in the real world. A joy to hear these concepts brought up here. Give me some time to keep meditation in what you have written.

I feel we have such a path of being patient with each other…everyone processes and learns at different speeds. How can we lose patience with “the kid” for not understanding how to be aware of despair…and be a person who can live with the awareness and opposites of despair. How do we have a community that can talk and teach learn share…these concepts….that also have room for people in different places of experience. How does a real life contemporary “the kid” experience integration?
