Congratulations, Marty, on the new website. You founded the old one and it had a long run. Best of success with this one.
Peter JosyphQuote01 Apr 2012 at 2:21 pm #570I’d like to second Peter’s congratulations. It’s looking pretty slick in here. And finally we can get email notifications and the like! Great job.
DowdyQuote01 Apr 2012 at 2:21 pm #57101 Apr 2012 at 2:24 pm #574One thing – I seem to have access to the WordPress dashboard of the site. It sort of looked like I might be able to fiddle around with things there but I didn’t touch anything for fear of doing damage. Not sure if this is something innocuous in which I wouldn’t actually be able to make any changes to the site, but I just thought I’d flag it up for you in case it is something that needs changing.
DowdyQuote01 Apr 2012 at 2:27 pm #577
AnonymousI’m confused by that also. I also wonder if there is a way of downloading a picture to put in our little boxes to replace the greyscale and white chess pawn looking thing.

You should have access to the WordPress Dashboard. It should not, however, be unlimited.
I’ve set the role as “Forum Participant.” If you can actually change anything else, let me know ASAP.
Thanks,
Marty

Those are called Gravatars.
I think you can go to Gravatar.com and enter an email address. Pick an image, and it shows up across all WordPress sites when you post. Or something crazy like that.
WebmasterQuote01 Apr 2012 at 2:33 pm #581Marty,
Ah, I see. I don’t think it’s unlimited. I am able to access the list of users along with their email addresses, and can see various other usual WordPress things, but the dashboard doesn’t seem to be as extensive as it is on my own WordPress site. I do have the Quick Press thing in the top right, which allows me to publish something. Would that just create a topic in one of the forums? Should I try it out as a test?
DowdyQuote01 Apr 2012 at 2:41 pm #58301 Apr 2012 at 2:45 pm #58701 Apr 2012 at 2:47 pm #588Just tried it there, Marty. It created a post filed as ‘Uncategorized’, so it doesn’t seem to appear in any of the proper forums and presumably can’t be accessed without going through the back door, so to speak. It’s probably fine, but it might create administrative hassle if people or spambots pile a load of crap onto your server load, so if you can prohibit ‘Forum Participants’ from accessing the Quick Press feature it might save you more work down the line.
DowdyQuote01 Apr 2012 at 2:49 pm #589Let me know if you want me to try and break anything else. My motto is ‘If it ain’t broke, I’ll try and break it.
DowdyQuote01 Apr 2012 at 2:53 pm #59101 Apr 2012 at 2:54 pm #592Oh christ, I just spotted there that it actually appeared on the front page. I can also edit your own ‘Welcome’ post on that page. The urge to create mischief is so strong it’s actually physically paining me trying to control myself.
I’m also praying that this whole thing isn’t an April Fool’s joke…
DowdyQuote01 Apr 2012 at 2:54 pm #59301 Apr 2012 at 3:36 pm #597See if you can still:
1) make a new post with QuickPress, and
2) edit my welcome postThanks,
WebmasterQuote01 Apr 2012 at 4:42 pm #60701 Apr 2012 at 5:26 pm #612I think I’ve finally managed to lock the site down properly.
Y’all could have created some real trouble.
Thanks for not doing that.
WebmasterQuote01 Apr 2012 at 5:34 pm #613Sorry for the delay, was watching a movie just now (Martha Marcy May Marlene, which was very good indeed). Just tried again and I can no longer cause any divilment in the dashboard. Good work Marty. Also, kudos on the April Fool’s gag (I particularly liked McCarthy staring wistfully in the distance thinking about the miraculous toothpaste incident)!
DowdyQuote01 Apr 2012 at 9:14 pm #62201 Apr 2012 at 9:44 pm #628Okay…so I’ve been messing around a little bit…kind of using some of the options here, Marty. I tested out linking a post to my blog. Easy peasy. I tested out linking to Facebook and my Twitter homepage. Easy peasy.
I like these options…and they were smooth as all get out. Nice work cowboy.
Candy MinxQuote05 Apr 2012 at 2:21 pm #686Dear dear Webmaster…
I love you. I love rick. I dream about you two cuddly men with some of the best hugs the universe has ever doled out.
I am very excited about the new site and many things about it.
Have you ever known me to put forth an idea delicately? Am I not the Queen of putting my foot in my mouth and telling it like it is? Have I ever backed down from taking a stand when it comes to “doing the right thing”? Risking diplomacy and friendship in the doing so?
No.
It’s a curse, believe me.
…did I tell you I love you? I do.
….bbbbuuuuutttt…..
After several days of coming to visit and making posts and reading through the site and playing with my blog link and twitter…I find one SMALL detail.
I find the sections and the different pages a little bit of extra how do i say…effort, work? Distracting a little…
You know one of the things that I feel was very special about the old site…was being able to make one or two clicks and looking at the whole page of entries and seeing if there were any new posts.
It wasn’t just about being lazy (which i admit I am a bit of a slacker) but it is also about stream of consciousness and the flow of discussions. And quickly knowing where one has posted. I can’t help feel that the Forum was unique from other discussion boards because you could scan over topics in one look…and transfer to enter each discussion in a way that seemed to mimic the organic way the brain and mind works.
I find the separate pages a bit troubling when trying to see if someone is posting or anything new is out there or where I last read.
I have no idea if anyone else feels this way…or if its just some weird quirk I had…but I felt I needed to share this with you and with others here.
Obviously the new site hasn’t prevented me from talking my ass off here or anything…but I just wanted to put this out there.
…please know that I love the work you do here and your soul is wonderful!!!!!
feeling crappy

Thanks for your comments. It’s a WordPress plugin I’m using, and it’s to some extent configurable. I don’t know whether I can stop the multi-page thing, though the old Forum was nearly unique in the one-page-ness of the threads.
Let me look into it and see what I can find out.
Marty
WebmasterQuote06 Apr 2012 at 2:49 pm #698Oh Marty, you’re such a rock star. I have felt like a creep for saying anything all night when I went to work…I just felt sheepish.
I see what you’re saying about the plug ins. This may not be an issue for anyone else. But if it is configurable…I will owe you at least a steak dinner. You know I can make it to Memphis in 8 hours and Stagg and I are hoping to be there to busk some art work down on Beale Street in the next couple months ha ha!
Cheers, and thanks for listening.

Candy MinxQuote06 Apr 2012 at 4:34 pm #700I’ve upped the message count per page to 50. I may go to 100, eventually, but I think we should be cautious and see how this thing treats us.
Y’all let me know if you have problems or other aesthetic concerns.
Thanks,
Marty

For what it’s worth & despite what’s been said, I like the look & feel of the new site & I wouldn’t feel the need to change anything. I understand a tweak here & there but it’s fine as it is. Great job putting it together.
MarcQuote06 Apr 2012 at 8:34 pm #711“I have no idea if anyone else feels this way…or”
I do. Would be nice if all recent posts could be noted on one page.
leedriverQuote07 Apr 2012 at 6:24 am #714The one-page overview of active threads at Jada, with archiving but easy access of older threads, was quite handy for a quick, one-click visit to the forum several times a day to see what was up. Thanks, though, Marty et al. for providing such a forum and even allowing for non-McCarthy discussion threads.
Greg S.Quote07 Apr 2012 at 8:55 am #715Yes Marty you make sense about letting the site and us see how it treats is.
I am on my phone right now and this new site is a whole different animal. Not even the blog background color shows up. Very interesting. It’s like I’m seeing the bare bones of the matrix here ha ha.
I totally see a difference with the extension of pages ratio of posts. It’s made it a little more user friendly.
It will be interesting to see how this works and you are so generous to let us respond with how it feels from this side of the grid.
I will trying posting image again when I get home…. Thanks. It’s kind of fun checking out how to load a video etc. but not on my phone… Let’s see if this works…
Candy MinxQuote07 Apr 2012 at 9:51 am #722That’d be a good thing if Marty could make the thread pages look like the old Jada site.
The “bare bones” look Candy speaks of could possibly be upgraded if Marty could offer a “desktop version” for mobile/tablet users. I’ve seen that at lots of blogs. Says something like “Use Full Version” or “Use Desktop Version.” I would love to be able to see the full site on my tablet. Thanks, Marty.
