Old old story. It was a domestic dispute with her boyfriend who was stoned out of his mind on both drugs and alcohol. The boyfriend called the cops and claimed assault and spun this idiotic story, and the El Paso cops – being excruciatingly stupid – believed someone who could barely stand up or see straight and arrested a sober woman who had no idea what they were talking about.

The whole case was thrown out of court. I thought I read that she sued for false arrest and settled with the city. This was all a long time ago.

Well, Rick was right about one thing. The story is old “news.” The event happened on January 4, 2014. But it was Jennifer McCarthy in Santa Fe, NM, who made the initial 911 emergency call that resulted in the visit to her home by the deputies. During the call, Jennifer admitted that alcohol and a gun were involved in their argument and falsely identified her manfriend as “Eric Jones.” When the deputies arrived they took statements from both parties and arrested Jennifer for “Aggravated Assault on a Household Member” according to the Probable Cause papers that were filed. I will omit the headline-grabbing sleazy details given in the statements to the officers and found in the report. Unfortunately, these were widely reported.

Some details: the charges against her were dismissed two months later, in March 2014. Jennifer McCarthy denied the more lurid embellishments completely, denied ever pointing a gun at her assailant. The judge didn’t buy the boyfriend’s ridiculous story, unlike the credulous and amazingly stupid cops who, confronted with a woman who had bruises and a puffy eye and had called them for help in the first place, found the boyfriend somehow more credible and arrested her instead of the lowlife who beat her up. It would seem that it was the word of a guy’s cockamamie d-porn ravings against the word of a visibly abused woman who called for protection.

It should be some comfort to El Pasoans to know that this kind of imbecility seems confined to the police department and does not appear to infect the bench.

Rick, you touch upon an amazing phenomenon that I can not explain. In my 15 years as a teacher in grades 7-12 on both coasts I’ve always noticed how women choose to be with “lowlife” men that are A) violent and B) users of heavily controlling substances. I want to intervene on occasion, but it is never welcomed by admin, and most parents want me to mind my business. Many of them grow out of it by their late-twenties/ early-thirties, though, if at all.

    Mike –

On the other hand, you’ve never met a guy who insisted on companioning a woman who was mean-spirited, abusive or stark raving out of her mind?

My point was slightly different: these nitwit cops apparently thought any woman’s story was unreliable compared to a crank diatribe from any male – even if the story was absurd and the woman was visibly battered. Inexcusable.
